Ukraine crisis Trump-Putin talks agree to stop energy attacks peace efforts continue

The White House has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin supports US President Donald Trump's proposal to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. This information came after the high-stakes conversation between the two leaders on Tuesday, as the US seeks a ceasefire with Ukraine.

According to the White House, Putin supported Trump's idea to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, but Russia has not yet made any official commitment on a 30-day ceasefire. Ukraine accepted the ceasefire last week, and Trump had made optimistic comments in recent days that Moscow would also agree to it.

The White House said about the Trump-Putin conversation, "The two leaders agreed that this conflict should end with a lasting peace. They also stressed the need to improve bilateral relations between the US and Russia. The blood and resources that both Ukraine and Russia have shed in this war should be spent on the needs of their people.

The White House further said, "This conflict should never have started and should have been ended long ago with sincere and good faith peace efforts. The two leaders agreed that the first steps towards peace would be a ceasefire on energy and infrastructure, as well as technical talks on the implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, a full ceasefire and lasting peace in the Middle East. These talks will begin immediately.

Trump and Putin also discussed the issue of the Middle East, particularly Iran. According to the White House, "The two leaders agreed that the future of improved bilateral relations between the United States and Russia offers enormous opportunities, including huge economic deals and geopolitical stability if peace is achieved." According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the conversation lasted for two and a half hours.

According to Russian state media, the Kremlin said Putin "supported" Trump's proposal to halt attacks on energy infrastructure in Russia and Ukraine for 30 days. However, regarding Trump's broader month-long ceasefire proposal, the Kremlin said "the Russian side identified a number of important issues related to ensuring effective control over a possible ceasefire along the entire line of contact, preventing forced recruitment into Ukraine, and the need to re-equip the Ukrainian armed forces.

The Kremlin also said Putin believed the condition for ending the war should be "a complete cessation of providing foreign military assistance and intelligence to Kiev.

The Trump administration had taken tough measures to halt military aid to Ukraine and restrict intelligence sharing. However, both of these instruments were resumed after Ukraine accepted the ceasefire last Tuesday.

Ukraine has said it would approve any agreement. Ahead of Tuesday's talks, a Ukrainian official said President Volodymyr Zelensky would be watching the talks with caution and keen interest. "We accepted the US ceasefire proposal without any conditions, and if Putin starts playing with Trump by making demands, it won't work," the source said.
